Frequently asked questions
Clear answers before the work begins.
Technology service involves devices, data, accounts, homes, and business systems. These answers explain the general service approach; a written estimate, authorization, or project agreement controls the specific job.
Do you have a walk-in store?
Neighbor & Main is appointment-based rather than walk-in. Help may be remote, on-site, or arranged for device intake depending on the request.
Which areas do you serve?
The initial on-site area includes Waukegan, Gurnee, North Chicago, Beach Park, Zion, Libertyville, and nearby Lake County communities. Work farther away may be possible by request.
Do you work with both homes and businesses?
Yes. Personal services include computers, setup, Wi-Fi, printers, security, privacy, data protection, lessons, and everyday technology. Business work adds defined IT, cloud, websites, intake and booking forms, security foundations, AI, automation, and consulting projects.
How do you charge?
Standard personal help starts at $39, with many common services between $69 and $119. Approved Community Tech Pricing starts at $29 for eligible personal services. Unknown faults begin with diagnosis or approved hourly work. Business and digital projects use published rates or a written fixed scope. You approve additional work, parts, licenses, and third-party costs first.
Do you offer lower prices during serious financial hardship?
Yes. Community Tech Pricing is available by application for selected personal and household services. Briefly explain why the standard price is out of reach and privately show one reasonable current document supporting financial need. You may redact sensitive and unrelated information. Approval remains valid for 12 months, with no appointment-frequency or monthly-dollar cap for listed services. It cannot be combined with another discount or promotion.
What does the $69 Browser & Pop-Up Cleanup cover?
It is a focused service for browser redirects, unwanted extensions, notification abuse, changed browser settings, and straightforward adware on one computer. If signs of deeper system infection, account compromise, operating-system damage, or a needed reinstall appear, work stops and the broader service price is explained before continuing.
Can you guarantee that no one is spying on my device?
No ordinary support check can guarantee that every sophisticated monitoring method is absent. Neighbor & Main can review common remote-access tools, account sessions, browser extensions, app permissions, sharing, and security warnings, then explain findings and appropriate referrals. Safety-sensitive or evidence-preservation situations require special care.
Do you build websites and business forms?
Yes. Projects range from a focused launch page to responsive multi-page websites, smart intake forms, booking setup, and connected approval or management workflows. The interactive demonstrations on the Web & Forms page are original fictional concepts, not customer work.
Will you access my files?
Only when the work reasonably requires it and you authorize that access. Whenever practical, you remain present for personal files and sign in to sensitive accounts yourself.
How should I share a password?
Prefer signing in yourself. When a credential truly must be shared, use a customer-controlled password manager or a temporary password that is changed afterward. Do not send passwords through the service-request form, ordinary email, or text.
Can you guarantee my data will not be lost?
No responsible provider can guarantee that when storage may already be failing or when repair changes carry risk. Maintain a current backup whenever possible. Backup status and data risk are discussed before relevant work.
How does remote support work?
You initiate or explicitly approve an attended session, can see the work, and can end the connection. Neighbor & Main will never make an unsolicited call demanding remote access or immediate payment.
Do you sell computers or parts?
Neighbor & Main can recommend and procure approved equipment, but recommendations are based on requirements rather than a promise to use one brand. Parts, tax, shipping, and warranties are documented separately.
Can you recover deleted or failed-drive data?
Basic recovery may be attempted when safe. Physically damaged, severely failing, encrypted, or critical media should go to a specialist laboratory. No recovery result can be guaranteed.
Do you provide 24/7 business support?
No. Business engagements define support hours, response targets, included systems, contacts, and escalation. Organizations needing around-the-clock coverage are better served by a managed-service partner with an around-the-clock team.
Can AI or automation make mistakes?
Yes. AI can be inaccurate, and automations can fail because of data, permissions, vendor changes, or outages. Projects need test cases, error handling, human review, and a manual fallback appropriate to the risk.
Local, practical support
Still have a question?
Ask it in plain language. If Neighbor & Main is not the right provider, an honest answer is more useful than forcing the fit.
